Step aside Snapchat, there is a new kid on the block.

IGTV has made its way into our Instagram feeds as a new addition to this fast-growing social media platform. But what’s all of the fuss about? It’s just another form of posting video content, right?

Picture this. You. Paris. The Eiffel Tower. How can you possibly record this incredible moment of time using only 15 seconds of Instagram’s stories feature?! We agree, you can’t. Enter IGTV. Stay tuned for all you need to know about this new addition, there is more to it than you may think.

IGTV allows vertical video content (up to 4K) to be streamed and relayed to your followers for up to 10 minutes at a time, with positive talk of this length extending in the near future. Using the IGTV icon at the top of your Instagram feed, you can search through three key categories, For You, Following, and Popular, to find engaging content that you want to watch. As a baby cousin of YouTube in style, IGTV is destined to be a platform of change, taking a traditional method of producing video content and modernising it to suit the ‘on-the-go’ millennial of today.

So long as you have updated your Instagram application to the latest version, the IGTV icon can be found in the top left of your screen. If you aren’t sold on using this feature through the Instagram application, you can download a standalone version too! The Instagram crew are devoted to making this new addition accessible to everyone.

There is no denying that the new norm in the social media realm is to know what you, as a user, want to see, before you have even thought about it. IGTV caters to this, selecting content that the new Instagram and Facebook algorithm has decided you will be interested in. Leaving unfinished videos paused for your return, IGTV is selling itself as a simplified YouTube. The content on this platform is no competition to HBO or Netflix in definition quality, but it will be completely catered to your interests. What’s more exciting is that anyone can create a channel and share their thoughts and opinions with the world, a fantastic way to keep connected and stay up to date with your interest.

The future of social media is fiercely dominated by a pay-for-play vibe. This is something we, as Digital Marketing experts, have to embrace. IGTV has arrived in a time where Instagram has 1 billion active users on its platform. With potential for exposure to 1 billion people in the world, IGTV is undoubtedly heading towards a paid advertisement segment of the Instagram platform, and we are excited to track this change into the future.

All we can say is, Instagram, you have done it again. We are thrilled with this latest update to the platform and are looking forward to the future of engaging video content online.
